The game that inspires these ruminations is Beyond the Doors, out this year, which has an alpha demo on Steam. It casts you as a lonely greasemonkey working in the basement of a dour, weed-hung apartment building. Your job is to bug your neighbours, in the sense of placing them under surveillance.
I have no idea whether this is deliberate, or a limitation of the demo, but I think Beyond The Doors is more powerful for refusing to satisfy the very voyeurism it kindles. I didn't get far enough to experience this in the demo, but going by the above header image and the trailer, it all gets a bit freaky later on. I'm intrigued to see how that freakiness gels with the absorbed tinkering that defines most automation-based games."This alpha version includes the core gameplay loop: placing recorders, building receiver networks, collecting sounds, and sending reports," write developers Dream Error on Steam. "There's much more to come, this is just the beginning." There's a development roadmap, if you're into that kind of thing, but Beyond The Doors is probably more fun if you preserve your ignorance before taking the plunge.Beyond the Doors Gameplay Trailer | Wishlist on SteamThis indie horror game casts you as a lonely greasemonkey working in the basement of a dingy, weed-hung apartment building. Here is a list of some of the best Chinese door games that you can play at your wedding.
These games are often played by the groomsmen, who must pass a series of challenges set by the bridesmaids before they can enter the bride’s room and see the bride. In Chinese culture, the door is a symbol of good fortune and prosperity, and the door games are seen as a way to bring good luck and blessings to the newlyweds. While the games can vary depending on the region and family, there are a few common themes that run through them. They usually involve physical challenges, puzzles, and tests of endurance, all with the aim of proving the groom’s worthiness as a husband. Many of the challenges also involve the groom’s friends and family, creating a sense of camaraderie and support. In Chinese communities, especially in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore, wedding door games are challenges set up by the bridesmaids for the groom as a ceremonial demonstration of the groom's love for the bride. These games typically take place in the morning of the wedding at the bride's family home, before the groom is allowed to receive the bride in the bride's room. These games are distinct from the practice of nàohūn (闹婚; 'creating turbulence') in China, sometimes confusingly also known as wedding games, in which the couple, particularly the bride, is teased by their guests during or after the wedding. Door games are known in Chinese in mainland China as "games with which to receive the groom" jiēqīn yóuxì (接亲游戏) or "games with which to block the door" dǔmén yóuxì (堵门游戏).Before the games start, the groom and groomsmen must first pay a fee in order for the bridesmaids to open the door. It is common for the groom and groomsmen to prepare red envelopes filled with cash that they use to negotiate with the bridesmaids who guard the door.Bitter foods used for this purpose include bitter tea and bitter gourd, while spicy foods include wasabi and chilli padi. In addition, declarations of love through words, songs and poems from the groom may also be requested. It is not uncommon for door games to also include physical tests, such as push-ups, and cross-dressing, especially in Malaysia and Singapore. Some couples set boundaries on the games, such as excluding sexual elements. One wedding photographer estimated in 2016 that roughly 20% of Singaporean Chinese couples do away with such wedding door games, even while retaining the other elements of a traditional Chinese wedding.

Was Cellar Door Games dissolved? My last visit to their website was a disappointment. Expected to see what other games they are making and the last one they release was RL2, no new games or news about the company, what is happening? Was hoping to by another game made by them to support them because I really f****** love RL.They aren't dissolved. From what we know they are working on a new game, as suggested by their Twitter post around the end of 2024, where they had announced that they were searching for a pixel artist experienced with creating environments.RL2 was an obvious cash grab; they saw how well the first did and said "well time to double dip". dont get me wrong, its far better than the first game in most ways. but then you see things like how the "true ending" is locked not only behind secret hidden flags that are never hinted at, but also playing through the game 7 times. It does not. Buying a game on GOG means that you can download the installer, keep it until after the apocalypse, and then (because you had the foresight to retreat to a solar-powered secret island) happily install and play it despite the internet (and the rest of the world) having been burned down.
